Your sterling silver Fist Full of Hope should last a lifetime when care is given to protect it.
Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place. Silver tarnishes when exposed to air, so it’s a good idea to keep your silver in airtight plastic bags or container when not in use.
Avoid wearing sterling silver when wearing lotions containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, ferric oxide, and calamine. These chemicals will accelerate tarnishing and may cause permanent damage.
Soak your necklace in warm soapy water (I like to use Dawn dishwashing liquid) to gently remove any oils or dirt. A soft bristle toothbrush helps, too. Be sure to dry it well before polishing.
Clean your jewelry with a jewelry polishing cloth. The cloth is chemically treated to safely remove tarnish without damaging the silver.
Use a non-abrasive brand name liquid or paste silver polish to remove heavy tarnish. Rinse thoroughly with warm, soapy water to remove all traces of polish. Dry your jewelry before storing it in an airtight zip lock bag or container.
"Dip" solutions should be avoided, even though it may say that it is safe for silver jewelry. Silver jewelry may change color and will never look the same if exposed to residues left behind from prior use. Additionally, the cultured pearl may be damaged.
Organic alternative to cleaning your silver jewelry that has tarnish build-up: fill an aluminum pan with really hot (but not boiling) tap water. Add about 2 teaspoons of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of salt. Stir a bit. Add your jewelry and let soak for 10 minutes. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
